This blog post provides a preview of the content the Performance Architects team will discuss during a free, live webinar on Thursday January 24, 2019 at 12:30 PM EST entitled “Everything You Wanted to Know (and More) About Oracle BI Publisher (Part 2).” Register here to attend the webinar!
Oracle BI Publisher (BIP) has been, and continues to be, one of the most popular ad-hoc and pixel-perfect reporting tools in Oracle’s business intelligence (BI) / analytics offerings. In years past, Oracle Hyperion Interactive Reporting (IR, also formerly known as Brio) was the only other ad-hoc reporting tool that offered a similar feature set. As many of you know, Oracle Premier Support ended for Interactive Reporting back in 2015. At that time, we saw users migrate in droves from IR to BI Publisher and to Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition (OBIEE) – and the Performance Architects team has performed numerous upgrades and implementations in support of these initiatives.
On December 20, 2017, Oracle’s Analytics team announced that BIP was going to be added to Oracle Analytics Cloud (OAC 17.4.5 Enterprise Edition), which was a welcome enhancement for many of our customers who had long since migrated from on-premises OBIEE to OAC. Since this announcement, we have been working hard to get the word out there about this helpful enhancement as well as OAC general capabilities, and have presented numerous times on this and related analytics topics in our webinar series and at national conferences including Analytics and Data Summit, COLLABORATE, Kscope, Oracle Higher Education Group (HEUG) Alliance, and others.
Part 1 of the “Everything You Wanted to Know (and More) About Oracle BI Publisher” webinar series provided a gentle introduction to BIP in the context of its inclusion in OAC. We covered the following topics at a high level for the benefit of attendees who were non-technical or new to BIP:
What is OAC?
Overview of OAC Oracle BI Publisher
Getting Started with OAC Oracle BI Publisher
Administration and Security
Data Model Editor
You can review a recorded session of, or slides from, this webinar by signing up for free for Performance Architects’ Learning Center, a community and forum that contains functional, technical and industry-specific “How To” sessions, webinars, and white papers.
Part 2 of this series was originally broadcasted and recorded December 17, 2018 and will be broadcasted as an encore presentation on January 24, 2019 from 12:30 to 1:30 PM EST.
In Part 2 of the series, we will review BIP from a process perspective, walking through all the steps involved in day-to-day BIP development. The webinar is oriented to attendees who may not be as technical, or are new to BIP. For those customers who have used BIP in the past, the webinar will offer reassurance that the features and functions that you used previously will be preserved in OAC.
Topics covered in Part 2 include:
List of Values
Choosing Data Model
Selecting Layout Type
Handling Large File Output
More specifically, in Part 2, we will break down the BIP workflow into two main areas: defining data and defining reports. Regardless of what reporting tool you may have used in the past, these steps are universal. We wanted to provide a way for attendees to begin to drawing parallels against tools they may already be familiar with. In addition, this webinar provides a checklist of steps for those attendees who want to give BIP a try using a trial of OAC. These are the steps we will present in more detail during the webinar:
In addition to the workflows, we will discuss a structural layout of all the objects within BIP to make the concepts easier to teach and understand. Here is an example of a BIP diagram we will review in more detail:
