How to Configure Oracle Analytics Cloud (OAC) to Connect to OTBI as a Data Source

One of the key features of the Oracle Analytics Cloud (OAC) environment is the wide variety of data sources that can be used to develop visualizations.  For customers who have moved their ERP applications to Oracle Human Capital Management (HCM) Cloud or Oracle Financials Cloud (OFC), these software-as-a-service or SaaS solutions include pre-built dashboards and analyses based on Oracle’s Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition (OBIEE) platform and packaged under the name Oracle Transactional Business Intelligence (OTBI).  This provides real-time access to the HCM and Financials content without having to extract and load data to a data warehouse.


OAC can connect to any Oracle Cloud OTBI environment, and that connection can then be used to create data sets that are available for ad-hoc reporting or as sources for data flows to generate new data sets.


Creating an OTBI-based data set begins with creating a “Connection.” Name the connection, and enter the URL of the Oracle SaaS OTBI environment.  The OTBI URL will always include “/analytics” following the cloud server host name.  Then enter an OTBI authorized username and the associated password.  Click “Save” when complete.

Once the connection has been created, navigate to the “Data Connections” list, find the new OTBI connection, and then click on “Create Data Set”.

The “Create Data Set” wizard is then displayed.  When creating an OTBI-based data set, there are three options, available on the upper right side of the data set creation window.

The first option is “Select Columns.”  With this option, select an OTBI subject area (tip: use the search box on the left to find a specific subject area more quickly).

The second option for sourcing an OTBI data set is to use an existing OTBI analysis as the basis of the query.   Navigate through the OTBI catalog folder structures to find the appropriate analysis and select it.


Here is an example of the analyses available in OTBI for HCM Cloud under the “Workforce Management” shared folder.

The third option is to write OBIEE Logical SQL against the OTBI Subject Areas. This would normally be done using the Logical SQL obtained from an existing analysis. That SQL can then be modified in any way and pasted into the “Statement” box of the data set configuration.  Below is the screen where the SQL can be entered:

When the first option is selected, the list of folders and columns within them is displayed.  Select the columns that are required for the new data set from the left side, and move to the “Selections” side of the window.  This screen shows how to select a metric:

Next, move to the “Filter” step.  Choose any columns to filter by and specify the type of filter:

Here, the “Gender = Female” filter is selected:

Click on “Get Preview Data” on the bottom of the page to examine the results of the data set query after the filters are applied. Finally, move to the last step in the “Data Set Creation Wizard” and specify a name for the data set and an optional description.  Click on the “Add” button on the right to complete the process:

The data set is now ready to be used in OAC projects and will execute against real-time OTBI data sources each time the query is run.

This screenshot shows example project canvases built from an OTBI data set.  Note that the results will always reflect the latest data in the cloud SaaS application.  No data is stored locally:

In conclusion, using OAC to access OTBI real-time data sources is a straightforward process that opens up your HCM or Financials Cloud data to advanced visualizations with minimal effort.
