Integration Options Between Oracle EPM (Hyperion) Strategic Modeling and Planning Cloud

As described in this previous blog post, Oracle EPM (Hyperion) Strategic Modeling, which is effectively the cloud version of Hyperion Strategic Finance, is a forecasting software-as-a-service (SaaS) solution that creates comprehensive financial statements with out-of-the-box treasury and debt modeling, scenario analysis, and robust consolidation capabilities. It allows you to quickly understand the impact of strategic decisions on your organization’s future financial outcomes, which is valuable for C-level executives, investors, and other pertinent individuals that analyze a company’s performance.

Even though Strategic Modeling is a standalone product for financial statement forecasting and modeling, you will typically use this in conjunction with an Oracle Planning Cloud solution at the same time. This helps to “close the loop” between strategic, operational and tactical budgeting and forecasting processes. As a result, improved data integration between Oracle Strategic Modeling and Oracle Planning Cloud is critical.

This blog post reviews integration solutions between Strategic Modeling and Planning Cloud. Each of these solutions offers strengths and limitations.

  1. Data Map / Smart Push

The most common integration solution uses Data Map, a capability that is part of the Oracle EPM solutions and that permits us to push data between Strategic Modeling and Planning Cloud. The two options are:

  • Going from a Strategic Modeling model to a Planning cube (database)

  • Going from a Strategic Modeling model to a Planning cube (database)

Advanced Data Map options are available also, but only if Strategic Modeling is enabled and is a source or target in the data map. Also, keep in mind that only administrators have privileges to create, edit, and run Data Maps.

For example, you can map multiple dimensions to a single dimension from Planning Cloud to Strategic Modeling,

Check the detailed account map, and then run the Data Map.

The Data Map option is a good option to use. However, it does have limitations. If our target is a Planning cube, when we open up a Planning form, we cannot run Smart Push when saving the form. This is because Smart Push will be using the current data form as the source and push data to somewhere else. In our case, we would like to push data from Strategic Modeling to the current Planning form. Also, if the source is an ASO cube, the Data Map or Smart Push capabilities will not work.

2. Groovy Rules

Groovy rules provide the flexibility to move data as we expect. We can create Groovy rules in the Calculation Manager in Oracle Planning Cloud. We can create rules to feed data bi-directionally from Planning and Strategic Modeling. The ways we can run Groovy rules include:

  • On the rules page

  • Within the context of a form

  • Using job scheduler

  • In dashboards and task lists

  • Using EPM Automate

The general logic of creating these Groovy rules includes:

  • Access the Planning cube

  • Define the data region

  • Build the data grid definition

  • Build the Planning grid

  • Collect data based on the grid definition

  • Form the Strategic Modeling grid based on the Planning grid, including calculations

  • Save to Strategic Modeling

Here is an example of pushing data from Planning to Strategic Modeling:

After running the Groovy rule on save, we can see the data has been pushed to 2019.  Similarly, we can push data from Strategic Modeling to Planning:
